San Diego, CA, September 15, 2010 –
SANYO employees from the SANYO Group’s regional companies in North America have volunteered to participate on Saturday, September 17, as a part of Ocean Conservancy’s 26th International Coastal Cleanup Day, a single-day signature volunteer cleanup event dedicated to cleaning up coastlines and communities all over the world. SANYO is expecting close to 200 employees and their families as volunteers from two countries, Canada and the United States, to participate in local communities where its offices are established and cleanup sites chosen together with local International Coastal Cleanup Day-affiliated organizations.
Marking its fourth year of participation in the International Coastal Cleanup Day, the volunteer efforts of SANYO staff members demonstrate the company’s continuing focus on advancing corporate social responsibility activities to support sustainable business and environmental practices.
In its 26th year, International Coastal Cleanup Day holds a signature annual event each September, where hundreds of thousands of volunteers from countries all over the world spend a day picking up and removing litter and debris in an effort to prevent them from taking a toll on underwater and water-related environments. According to Ocean Conservancy, over the last 25 years, almost nine million volunteers (8,763, 377) have participated to pick up 144 million pounds of trash, cleaning 291,514 miles of coastal and inland shoreline and waterways.
“While the primary goal of the International Coastal Cleanup Day is to clean the beaches, we have the opportunity to clean the urban environment in Otay Mesa, and that reflects the pride we take in where we work. With the generous support of SANYO and its employees, we are able to undertake this project and support the great work of I Love a Clean San Diego and San Diego Coastkeeper,” said Linda Greenberg, president of the Otay Mesa Chamber of Commerce.
SANYO, with its regional North American sales headquarters in San Diego, will be partnering in San Diego for local cleanup efforts with the Otay Mesa Chamber of Commerce, Southbay Expressway and I LOVE A Clean San Diego. More than half of the volunteers will participate in the cleanup efforts at the San Diego site which actually includes the roads around SANYO’s office. The site is called the “SANYO Street Sweep in Otay Mesa,” and the cleanup is scheduled from 9:00 to 11:30 am. The site captain this year will be Ms. Linda Greensburg, president of the Otay Mesa Chamber of Commerce.
“This is our fourth year in this tremendous program to keep the environment clean and show our company’s commitment to sustainability and understanding of our responsibility as part of the eco system.” said Mr. Masami Murata, president of SANYO North America Corporation. “Our employee volunteer contributions truly set an example of what it means to do something for the environment, and we hope that others will join SANYO in these efforts from whatever site is cleaned.”
